Custom Polaris Taps from NSi Minimize

Common Misconception

Have you ever had a contractor say, “Oh, just quote me whatever is standard….”?  Some products do not have a standard and can only be produced according to the specifications provided by the end user.  The NSi custom Polaris taps is an example of products that are produced according to specifications ONLY and do not have a standard.

The NSi custom Polaris taps are designed according to the specifications for the job.  Everything must be specified beginning with the gutter size down to the entry of ports!  All conductor sizes MUST be specified (no size ranges available). This is a non-returnable product and it is very important to ask these questions when quoting a custom Polaris tap:

1.  What size is the gutter?

2.  Can the ports be stacked if necessary?
3.
What are the total number of ports going in & the conductor size?
4.
What are the total number of ports going out & the conductor size?
5.
Does this tap have to be insulated or uninsulated?

Answering these simple questions will help us place a custom tap order accurately.  The custom Polaris taps have a lead time of 4 to 5 days after receipt of order and are a one day ship out of Florida<>.  Please feel free to contact Mike Jones at 800-333-8083 or MJones@gcaflorida.com with any questions or to request a quote.

BRK Has the CO Alarms to Meet the New Code

BRK_designed_color.bmpFla.  Stat.  § 553.885 - Carbon monoxide alarm required
Requires that every building for which a building permit is issued for new construction on or after July 1, 2008, and having a fossil-fuel-burning heater or appliance, a fireplace, or an attached garage shall have an approved operational carbon monoxide alarm installed within 10 feet of each room used for sleeping purposes.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless gas which can kill unsuspecting residents.  The most common causes of CO poisoning are idling cars, improper use of BBQ grills and portable generators.  During the 2004 hurricane season, 96% of CO poisonings were caused by generators.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the exhaust from a standard 5.5KW portable generator emits CO levels equal to six (6) idling cars.

Common questions are "where should carbon monoxide alarms be placed?" and "Isn't CO heavier than air, so shouldn't you place the alarm closer to the floor?" The Environmental Protection Agency has assigned carbon monoxide with a "specific gravity" of 0.9657, compared to 1.0 for air.  So being slightly lighter than air, CO will most likely rise with the home's normal air currents, and reach wall mounted alarms near the ceiling.  Please visit
www.brkelectronics.com for valuable information regarding the proper placement of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

BRK Electronics offers a full line of carbon monoxide alarms to meet the new Florida Statute.  From plug-in and battery operated units, to hardwired CO and combination smoke/CO alarms, BRK has a product that will meet your customer's needs.  For more information, please contact Wil Milligan or Ken Lambert at 813-349-0090.

Go greenwith aluminum?                             Alcan_Stabiloy2.JPG

According to Florida Trend magazine, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification requests grew by 75% between 2005 and 2007. Compact fluorescent lamps and waterless restroom fixtures are items getting a lot of attention when it comes to “green” construction. But, what if there were a product that most building occupants never saw, but still offered energy savings? Alcan’s Stabiloy feeders fit that description. AluminuAlcan_Stabiloy1.JPGm conductors offer green advantages from start to finish. From Alcan’s hydro-powered facilities around the globe, to the fact that recycling aluminum uses nearly half the energy (660º C) as that of copper (1100º C). Stabiloy’s lighter weight also requires less fuel for transportation.  All of these lead to reduced CO² emissions. With the reduced cost of Stabiloy compared to copper, designers can optimize circuit performance by increasing the cable size. The result can be operating temperatures 17º C cooler than equivalent copper conductors. This may not sound like much, but over time, this will have an impact in reducing the energy used to cool a building. And it saves money! Even with the increased conductor and conduit sizes, there can be material savings of up 14%. To learn more about Alcan Stabiloy products, please contact Ken Lambert at 800-333-8083, ext. 108 or at KLambert@gcaflorida.com.
