 GCA & EMS COMBINE FORCES! Minimize
Florida Electrical Reps Announce Agency Merger
Effective June 1, GCA Electrical Lighting, Tampa, and Electrical Marketing Services, Altamonte Springs, both in Florida, are merging and will operate as GCA/EMS out of a central location in Tampa.

Principals of the new electrical manufacturers representative organization are John Gunn, Jamey Yore and Joe Tumlin. GCA/EMS will be located at 1201 N. 50th St., Tampa, Florida 33619. Phone: (800) 333-8083. Management of the new firm is as follows:
* Gunn will serve as president in charge of day-to-day operations.
* Yore, vice president-industrial.
* Tumlin vice president-commercial.
* David Morrison will head the agency’s commodity department.
* Galen Strannigan, former Florida district sales manager for Thomas & Betts, will serve as industrial sales manager.
* Robin Conway, former southeast sales manager for Crescent/Stonco, will be in charge of the newly established lighting division.

GCA/EMS also will have 10 inside sales people and two distinct and separate outside sales teams. According to Joe Tumlin, “The first sales team (seven sales specialists) will create sales opportunities at the OEM and contractor level. The second (11 sales specialists) will focus on traditional distribution.”

John Gunn adds “This unique sales organization is what is setting us apart from any other agency in the state of Florida. No one has a devoted sales team the size of ours dedicated solely to creating opportunities at the end user level.” In making the merger announcement Gunn emphasizes that while “These are indeed challenging economic times, we feel now is the perfect opportunity to merge the two businesses covering all the contractor/industrial segments of Florida including OEMs, MROs, commercial and domestic exporters. This decision brings together companies that are philosophically alike that will serve the Florida electrical marketplace in a way no other agency has previously.”

The new organization will cover the traditional Florida contract territory plus maintain a large presence with the domestic exporters in south Florida, as well as the Caribbean Basin. He added that the decision to call the new agency GCA/EMS was made in order to “let our customers and principals know that we are still the same organizations but we are now working together to better anticipate and meet their needs.” GCA, founded in 1988, has represented manufacturers in both the commercial and industrial markets. EMS, founded by Joe Yore in 1983, was purchased by his son Jamey in 2005.

When Tamper “Resistant” Isn’t Enough…Quazite_Lockout1.JPG
Quazite LockOut System!

Distributors frequently ask for “tamper resistant” bolts as an accessory for their Quazite boxes. These bolts require a special tool to install and remove the enclosure cover. Tamper resistant bolts offer a moderate amount of protection from unwanted entry.

HoweQuazite_Lockout2.JPGver, enclosures installed in areas such as airports, telecommunication and military facilities as well as utility installations need additional protection. For these applications, Quazite is now offering our new Secure Cover Lockdown option. Available on PD, PG, and PT style covers 11” X 18” and larger, Quazite will pre-drill the cover to allow installation of the LockOut device (sold separately).  This keyed insert is made of corrosion resistant stainless steel, which also discourages attempts to drill out the mechanism. Look for the ETL LabelETL.JPG

In our industry, the UL Listed label is a symbol that the product we are selling or installing meets the required standards for safety and performance.  However, Underwriters Laboratories is only one of many Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTL’s) being used by manufacturers to certify their products.

InterTek-ETL is one of the oldest testing laboratories, having started with Thomas Edison over 100 years ago. ETL has more than 930 labs, in 103 countries around the globe. Recognized by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), InterTek-ETL is a leader in product testing and certification.

With the cost and time required to have products listed by UL, many manufacturers are turning to other NRTL’s for testing. You will see the ETL Listed mark on our BRK Electronics smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, and Galvan ground rods. InterTek-ETL is recognized by the International Association of Electrical Inspectors. To your local inspectors, the ETL mark is no different from the UL label.

BRK Has the CO Alarms to Meet the New Code

BRK_designed_color.bmpFla.  Stat.  § 553.885 - Carbon monoxide alarm required
Requires that every building for which a building permit is issued for new construction on or after July 1, 2008, and having a fossil-fuel-burning heater or appliance, a fireplace, or an attached garage shall have an approved operational carbon monoxide alarm installed within 10 feet of each room used for sleeping purposes.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless gas which can kill unsuspecting residents.  The most common causes of CO poisoning are idling cars, improper use of BBQ grills and portable generators.  During the 2004 hurricane season, 96% of CO poisonings were caused by generators.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the exhaust from a standard 5.5KW portable generator emits CO levels equal to six (6) idling cars.

Common questions are "where should carbon monoxide alarms be placed?" and "Isn't CO heavier than air, so shouldn't you place the alarm closer to the floor?" The Environmental Protection Agency has assigned carbon monoxide with a "specific gravity" of 0.9657, compared to 1.0 for air.  So being slightly lighter than air, CO will most likely rise with the home's normal air currents, and reach wall mounted alarms near the ceiling.  Please visit
www.brkelectronics.com for valuable information regarding the proper placement of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

BRK Electronics offers a full line of carbon monoxide alarms to meet the new Florida Statute.  From plug-in and battery operated units, to hardwired CO and combination smoke/CO alarms, BRK has a product that will meet your customer's needs.  For more information, please contact Wil Milligan or Ken Lambert at 813-349-0090.

Go greenwith aluminum?                             Alcan_Stabiloy2.JPG

According to Florida Trend magazine, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification requests grew by 75% between 2005 and 2007. Compact fluorescent lamps and waterless restroom fixtures are items getting a lot of attention when it comes to “green” construction. But, what if there were a product that most building occupants never saw, but still offered energy savings? Alcan’s Stabiloy feeders fit that description. AluminuAlcan_Stabiloy1.JPGm conductors offer green advantages from start to finish. From Alcan’s hydro-powered facilities around the globe, to the fact that recycling aluminum uses nearly half the energy (660º C) as that of copper (1100º C). Stabiloy’s lighter weight also requires less fuel for transportation.  All of these lead to reduced CO² emissions. With the reduced cost of Stabiloy compared to copper, designers can optimize circuit performance by increasing the cable size. The result can be operating temperatures 17º C cooler than equivalent copper conductors. This may not sound like much, but over time, this will have an impact in reducing the energy used to cool a building. And it saves money! Even with the increased conductor and conduit sizes, there can be material savings of up 14%. To learn more about Alcan Stabiloy products, please contact Ken Lambert at 800-333-8083, ext. 108 or at KLambert@gcaflorida.com.
